What will be the biggest social media trends in 2019 for brands and businesses?

Hootsuite did an annual report and brings up some answers. It is based on a survey of more than 3,000 Hootsuite customers, from large companies to small agencies, conducted in late 2018. They also included information from interviews with dozens of industry analysts.

New formats, challenges and forms of participation make 2019 an exciting time to work on social media. Here is a possible roadmap to navigate and prosper in the coming year.

2018 represented a year of crisis for trust in social networks. Following the Cambridge Analytica scandal and a Zuckerberg hearing in Congress, Facebook faced pressure from users and regulators to improve security, transparency and accuracy.

Meanwhile, Twitter fought controversies over the large presence of bots on its platform, eliminating millions of fake accounts.

In recent months, consumers, regulators, and media watchers have questioned the privacy, accuracy, and ethics of nearly all social media.

The result: 60 percent of people no longer trust social media companies.

For brands on social media, this shift presents new challenges and opportunities. Users have distrusted many media and celebrity influencers (whose followers are often bought or fake).

Trust has returned to friends, family and immediate acquaintances on social media, as well as traditional and trusted journalistic media.

According to consultancy Block Party, Stories, vertical videos invented by Snapchat are now growing 15 times faster than feed- based sharing .

Facebook’s own chief product officer, Chris Cox, shared a graph showing that Stories are poised to surpass information sources as the number one way people share things with their friends over the next year.

And nearly a billion users on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat already turn to Stories to share.

Social media is moving from text-based platforms, originally designed for desktop use, to truly mobile-only networks. Thus, they allow users to capture experiences in the moment, and stories incorporate that twist.

The stories are overwhelmingly visual and are intended to be created and consumed on the go with nothing more than a smartphone and a creative eye. Because they are ephemeral there is more room for fun and experimentation.

The stories feel real, immediate and intensely personal.

For brands, this trend on social media requires a major shift in focus in 2019.

While high production value posts are still important, it is key to balancing different styles of content. More and more, brands are embracing the intimate and multimedia aspect of stories .

The Guardian and Tictail are finding that less realistic and more polished stories perform better than heavily edited shots filled with heavy-handed calls-to-action.
